Rent a reservation system month after month and, five years on, you own no more of it than on day one. Stop paying and the system stops. HappyChef turns that around: you buy the licence once, and what that means is now a contract in the terms, not a slogan on a website.
Six Commitments You Can Hold HappyChef To
- Pay once. No monthly invoice ever arrives for the right of use.
- The licence stays. Cancel hosting, support or an AI service and only that service ends.
- It moves with the sale. Sell the restaurant and the licence passes to the buyer free of charge, as an asset on your balance sheet.
- An acquirer is bound. If HappyChef is ever bought, the buyer must keep the same promise.
- The source code is secured. An independent escrow agent holds it and releases it if HappyChef stops.
- Your guests stay yours. Export your guest data in one click, including on the day you leave.
What Happens If HappyChef Is Ever Gone
A licence for life only counts if someone can keep the software running. So every quarter the full source code, the build scripts and the documentation go to an independent custodian, without passwords and without guest data. Once a year that custodian builds and boots the deposit in a clean environment, and the certificate is published.
- On bankruptcy or discontinuation the deposit is released to every owner, or HappyChef publishes the source code under a free licence.
- After an acquisition the same applies if the buyer shuts the system down within two years.
- Each owner individually holds that right in their own agreement, with no association or intermediary needed.
Why It Matters If You Rent By The Month Today
For an owner paying monthly today, the question shifts from what the system costs to what is still yours when you stop. With HappyChef, that is the licence, your guest list and, in the worst case, the source code. Founder Thibault Van de Sompele set the promise out in plain language on the Ownership Promise page; the Dutch text is the binding version.
You switch on the day your current contract ends. The one-time setup fee of €250 covers moving your data and a personal onboarding. To see where the idea comes from, read the Anti-Subscription Manifesto, and to help decide what gets built next, join the Owners Council.
Ask About It At Stand 4029
From 15 to 18 November 2026 HappyChef is at Horeca Expo in Flanders Expo, Ghent, on stand 4029. The chapter from the terms is on the table there, and the team will work out with you when your switch can happen.
