Tesco wants to turn a closed pub in a Dublin village into a shop. The Irish Times reports that it is in advanced talks to buy the former Comans pub in Rathgar village, Dublin 6.

Nothing is signed yet. Several other bidders are believed to have looked at the site.

If the deal goes through, Tesco would apply for a change of use. It is expected to keep the outside of the building to protect its heritage. The site has a large car park at the back.

The shop would face a SuperValu run by Musgrave. Tesco already trades in nearby Terenure and Rathmines. It has 194 Irish outlets, with four more due by the end of 2026.

The Comans family opened the pub in the late 1950s and ran it for almost half a century. A legal dispute with the sons then left it shut. The family's other pub next door, Bottlers Bank, still trades.

What Does This Mean For Your Restaurant?

For nearby pubs and restaurants, a new supermarket means another competitor for drinks, ready meals and lunch trade. It also shows how much a closed pub site can be worth to a big chain.
