Malta

In Short

  • The Malta Tourism Authority approved 30 new hotel projects in 2026.
  • They are spread over 12 localities, led by Gżira with 7 and St Julian's with 6.
  • The authority does not track whether approved projects get built.
  • The projects are classed as 3 and 4 star hotels.

Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela told Parliament that the Malta Tourism Authority approved 30 new hotel projects in 2026. The answer came after a question from Nationalist Party MP Graziella Galea.

The projects are in 12 places, including Buġibba, Gżira, Ħamrun, Marsa, Sliema, Valletta and Ta' Xbiex.

Gżira has the most projects with 7, ahead of St Julian's with 6 and Ta' Xbiex with 4. The listed hotels are rated 3 and 4 star.

The authority told Parliament it has no information on the development status of the projects. So it is not clear how many will actually open.

What Does This Mean For Your Restaurant?

New hotels bring more rooms, and more guests who eat out nearby. If you run a restaurant in one of these towns, it is worth watching which projects move forward, for both guests and staff competition.
