Darina Allen studied hotel management in Dublin and then went to Ballymaloe House in East Cork to learn from Myrtle Allen, whose menus were built on local produce[2][3]. She married Myrtle's son Tim in 1970 and began teaching cookery from their home at Kinoith[3].

In 1983 she and her brother Rory O'Connell founded Ballymaloe Cookery School, which now sits on a 100-acre organic farm[1][4]. She presented nine series of Simply Delicious on Irish television and has written more than ten books[1].

Her awards include IACP Cooking Teacher of the Year in 2005, the André Simon award for Forgotten Skills in 2010 and an Irish Book Award for 30 Years at Ballymaloe in 2013[1][2]. She helped set up Ireland's farmers' market movement and represents Ireland in Slow Food[1][4].
