Ordering Apps Reveal Pizza Prices Differ By County
A new index reads chain menus from ordering apps and finds prices can differ by up to 38% between Irish counties.
In Short
- A daily index reads the menu prices of six fast food chains from their apps.
- Four Star Pizza prices differ by 38% between its restaurants.
- A medium Domino's pizza costs €15.99 in Dublin 11 and €18.99 in Castlebar and Tuam.
- Supermac's, KFC, Eddie Rockets and Burger King keep prices almost the same everywhere.
A comparison tool called the Drive Thru Index shows that fast food prices in Ireland can depend on where you live. It reads each chain's menu from its ordering app every day.
The widest gap is at Four Star Pizza. Its Americana pizza costs between €8 and €11 across 44 restaurants, a 38% spread.
Domino's shows a 19% spread over 74 restaurants. A medium cheese and tomato pizza is €15.99 in Dublin 11, €16.99 in Cork and €18.99 in Castlebar and Tuam.
Fast food apps now know what you order, when and where, but customers can't see how prices are set.
Other chains are far more even. A Supermac's five-item basket is €28.90 everywhere, and a KFC Zinger Burger is €7.95 in all 36 restaurants.
The index was built by Anthony Gherghetta, a software developer from Australia. He says customers cannot see how app prices are set.
What Does This Mean For Your Restaurant?
Prices in ordering apps are now easy for anyone to compare. If you sell through delivery or pickup apps, check that your menu prices are set on purpose and not by habit.
