Warm Weather Dents Diageo Pub Sales In Ireland And Britain

Diageo says hotter weather and competition cut sales in Britain and Ireland, while Guinness grew strongly in North America.

Ireland

In Short

  • Diageo's net sales rose 0.6% in the quarter to 30 September.
  • Sales in Great Britain and Ireland fell by a low single-digit percentage.
  • The company blamed unusually hot weather and competition.
  • Guinness grew by double digits in North America.
  • Diageo opened a €300m brewery in Kildare and plans another €400m there.

Diageo says the hot summer hurt its sales in Britain and Ireland. The drinks group reported a small rise in net sales of 0.6% for the three months to 30 September.

Sales in Great Britain and Ireland fell by a low single-digit percentage, which Diageo put down to unusually hot weather and competitive pressure. North America fell 3.6%, but Guinness and Smirnoff Ice grew by double digits there.

The results represent a small step in the right direction.

Dave Lewis · Diageo CEO

The company employs more than 1,200 people in Ireland and has opened a €300m brewery at Littleconnell, Co Kildare. It plans to invest a further €400m over three years.

CEO Dave Lewis called the results a small step in the right direction in a challenging market.
