A Family Restaurant On The Border
In Short
Joe and Vera Maguire open a restaurant in the Cavan village of Blacklion. Their son Neven will grow up in its kitchen and learn to cook at his mother's side.
Blacklion is a small village in Co Cavan, right on the border with Fermanagh. In 1969 Joe and Vera Maguire opened a restaurant there, the MacNean[1]. It was a family business from the very first day.
The early years were not easy. Four years after it opened, a bomb closed the restaurant. The family did not give up. The MacNean opened its doors again in 1989[1].
Lessons At Vera's Side
By then young Neven was already in the kitchen. He started cooking with his mother Vera when he was twelve[2]. She did not just teach him recipes. She sent him to the local butcher to buy the meat, so he learned early where good food comes from[3].
Cooking was not a typical hobby for a boy in rural Ireland at the time. Neven did not care. He became the first boy in his school to take Home Economics[3]. Today he is the national ambassador for the subject, a fitting role for the boy who broke the mould[3].
Those years in Vera's kitchen gave him a habit that never left: cook with what the local farmers and butchers bring to the door. Years later, food writers would praise him for sourcing locally long before it was fashionable.
A Kitchen That Became A Career
Many young cooks leave home to find fame in the city. Neven would travel, train and work abroad first. But the little restaurant in Blacklion was always the place he would come back to[2].
It was also where his mother kept cooking long after he took the lead. In 1996, a national newspaper found Vera still at the stove beside her son, more than a quarter of a century after she first opened the doors[1].
So the story of Neven Maguire does not begin with a television studio or a cookbook. It begins in 1969, with a young couple, a village on the border and a family kitchen that refused to stay closed[1][2].
