Budget 2027 Lifts Malta's Per-Night Tourist Charge To €8
Malta's Budget 2027 raises the eco-contribution for hotel guests. The hotels and restaurants association calls the new rate too sharp.
In Short
- The eco-contribution rises from €1.50 to €8 per person per night, capped at €64.
- Short-let apartments pay €10 a night, capped at €80.
- Cruise passengers will pay €10 and Comino visitors €5.
- The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association calls €8 too sharp, even by European standards.
Malta's 2027 Budget raises the charges visitors pay. The eco-contribution in collective accommodation goes from €1.50 to €8 per person per night.
The opposition says the government has not explained the increases. The tourism trade is divided.
The new rate is capped at €64 per stay. Short-let apartments pay €10 a night, up to €80. A €10 charge for cruise passengers and a €5 fee for Comino visitors are also planned.
The eco-contribution cannot guarantee a higher-quality tourism product.
The papers put the expected income at about €182 million from accommodation and €214 million from the whole tourism package.
The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association says €8 is too sharp and could hurt competitiveness. The Malta Chamber backs the rise if the money improves the tourism product.
What Does This Mean For Your Restaurant?
If your guests are mostly visitors, expect the higher charge to show up in their total trip cost. Watch how the final law is worded before you change any prices.
