Wholesale Power Costs Nearly Double In A Year
New CSO figures show wholesale electricity prices up 92.8% in a year, with fuel costs also sharply higher. What that means for kitchens.
In Short
- Wholesale electricity cost 92.8% more in September than a year earlier.
- Prices rose 6.8% in one month, from August to September.
- All energy fuels, petrol and diesel included, were 47.6% dearer than a year ago.
- Food producer prices rose only 1.2% over the same twelve months.
Ireland's Central Statistics Office says wholesale electricity prices almost doubled in a year. September was 92.8% above September 2025.
The jump is linked to the war in the Middle East, which keeps pushing up oil and gas prices.
Month on month, wholesale power rose 6.8% from August. Even so, it is still 53% below the peak of August 2022.
Fuels in general are up too. The CSO puts all energy fuels, including petrol and diesel, 10.9% higher than in August and 47.6% higher than a year ago.
Food is moving much more slowly. Food producer prices rose 0.4% on the month and 1.2% over twelve months.
What Does This Mean For Your Restaurant?
For a restaurant, energy is the cost that is moving, not ingredients. Check when your electricity contract renews and ask your supplier what a fixed price would look like now.
