A quiet Sunday in Ireland, but a busier one in Malta. The Prime Minister spoke of a new restaurant investment, and the Sunday papers looked hard at tourism and growth.

In Dublin, a small neighbourhood café got a warm review.

An International Restaurant Name Will Invest In Malta

Malta

Prime Minister Robert Abela said a foreign restaurant brand will invest in Malta together with Maltese operators. He linked it to talks held at the World Tourism Summit in Malta this month.

He did not name the brand, the location, the jobs or the amount.

Abela also said the Budget on 26 October brings another income tax cut for all workers. Energy and fuel prices will stay subsidised, which matters for the 32,500 people who are self-employed full time.

Victoria Plans For Longer Stays In Gozo

Victoria · Malta

Victoria will be a European Capital of Culture in 2031. Its mayor, Brian Azzopardi, told MaltaToday he wants it to lift the quality of tourism in Gozo.

His hope is that visitors sleep on the island and pick Gozo on purpose, instead of coming for a day trip from Malta.

He also wants to avoid what happened in Valletta, where rents and property prices pushed residents out.

More Tourists, But Each One Spends Less

Malta

In a MaltaToday column, economist JP Fabri says Malta grows mostly by adding workers, firms and visitors, not by producing more per worker.

He cites a 16.5% rise in tourist arrivals in the first four months of 2026, while spending per visitor fell 1.8%. Real unit labour costs rose 2.8% in 2025, far above the EU's 0.6%.

For a restaurant, that means more covers but thinner tickets, while staff costs keep climbing.

Crowding And Traffic Now Worry The Maltese Most

Malta

A MaltaToday survey finds 30.4% name population growth as the biggest problem, up from 22.3% a year ago. Traffic follows at 28.6%.

Only 5.7% now point to the cost of living, down from 13.4%. In Gozo, construction worries 16.4% of people, twice the national figure.

What Does This Mean For Your Restaurant?

Malta's visitor numbers keep growing, but each guest is spending a little less. With the Budget eight days away, it is worth waiting for the tax and energy details before you set next year's menu prices.
